‘-Where
has our Morality gone?

How Much is Too Much: ” Eve teasing outside exam centre’-- in Our City eve teasing s becoming . A Social Curse”
BACKGROUND--“City page Editors Note -Srinagar, Oct 30: The parents of
class 12th students appearing in final exams have complained of eve-teasing
outside the examination centre ….l. A delegation of parents said the
school vicinity has become a “hub of road Romeos” and that police was acting
mute. “I slapped a miscreant when he was trying to tease my daughter,”
said a mother of a student. The parents have appealed the IGP Kashmir ..
to look into the matter.”…
Our Society is suffering from many social evils at the moment. As the days
going on, some social issues are
becoming more and more dangerous .But the matter of fact that pained me to
write this article ,”Eve Teasing--a menace that has grown to alarming
proportions”. A girl is very important in every role, be it a mother,
daughter, wife or a sister. Women
in Kashmir valley occupied a very special position and respect in the modest society
of ours. Morality is a quality that was highly valued by all traditional
cultures in Kashmir. Alas! people have become indifferent to such crime scenes.
Today, at the turn of the twenty-first century all human societies have become ...
I am not against modernization, but for the
increasing effect of liberalization , eroding the traditional values in many
eastern societies. .. we will have to find a proper combination of modernity
and traditionalism in our society to ensure the safety of working women and students.
The wayward youth wait outside the gates in schools, colleges and as soon as girls walk passed by them they
start passing ribald comments , wolf-
whistles , coarse laughter, etc and at
times pushing have all become common for
women . Eve teasing is tormenting free life of women. Irony is,eve teasing was previously done by uneducated miscreants , but now even
educated students and employee/rs have resorted to this trait , which is a matter of shame .Our female
folk have to face this abuse, day in and
out,un fortunately most of them opt to remain silent which encourages
these shameless brutes.—I don’t want them to make
a road side-scene but some sort of
resistance is necessary . The question is – for how long? why should women be
subjected to such un-civilized and inhuman behavior almost daily? For how many
generations will parents keep on passing the same advice – to their
daughters of keeping calm in public;-avoiding
vulnerable areas /points infested with potential harassers (rowdy
youngsters /men), Walk in well-lit and frequented area.? Well, a lot has already been said about this
issue. Time has come that instead of words actions start speaking. A lot of
blame game has been played; Under public and media cry following tragic incidents
, sacrifices laid by our princesses of Haya (modesty) on “oxford street “ of ours around Barzulla –Hyderpora street authorities introduced many strategies
to curb this menace unfortunately such actions
eventually vanished with time. I agree
that one cannot wait for the police to be on the prowl at every street corner
all the time awaiting acts of eve teasing, the sad fact is that not many eve
teasers are brought to book..It's not only
police's duty to protect women but also our collective moral duty, social
obligation and legal right to fight against Eve Teasing. every citizen should try to stop eve
teasing and help women in tough situations. This is the problem of not only in
outside city schools and colleges- but tthese disturbing incidents unfortunately
take place in public transport, streets, offices and religious places. In traditional Kashmiri culture, people valued
the morality, respect for people's
property, honor ,and ……. This list is not exhaustive. Children were
traditionally socialized to respect other people's property. Through rewards
and punishments, the children grew up distinguishing between right and wrong..
Each family endeavored to ensure that their children respected their neighbor’s
daughter .Unfortunately ,our society today suffers from an acute lack of
critical thinking skills. No doubt Haya –is the priceless ornament of any self
respecting lady , and there is a definite connection between the way we dress
and how we think. If we dress like slobs, we soon begin to think like slobs.
Dress appropriately:
don’t wear a dress which –our traditional /religious values considers immodest,Today, my aim is not to put entirely blame on “dress style , that it
is only women in suggestive clothes who are eve teased .We must realize that
evil teasing all the times is not about
what women wear or where they go and at what time. It is about the perpetrators
of this social crime/and sin who go scot free .As they say in Urdu, "Nazar
Teri Kharaab, Burrka main pehnoon?" (why should I suffer for your bad
intentions).-(unquote)..Many adults agree that a lack of manners (-adab
akhlaq)in our children
is a growing problem. Raising a moral child or instill moral values in Children
isn't done just by talking to them; it's
done by example modeling by elders to
become polite and respectful to others especially
females. Disrespectful conduct portrayed in the media is also at
fault.Educators can play an important role in children’s development by
demonstrating basic civility. There should be bar on road Romeos outside
schools, colleges ,coaching centers .Every person caught eve teasing should be
dealt with in all sternness and there should not be any lenience for offenders-these
efforts work better if appropriate behavior is emphasized
throughout the school in conjunction with character education lessons.
