Never do I argue with a man with a desire to hear him say what is wrong, or to expose him and win victory over him. Whenever I face an opponent in debate I silently pray - O Lord, help him so that truth may flow from his heart and on his tongue, and so that if truth is on my side, he may follow me; and if truth be on his side, I may follow him. Greater Kashmir Published on : 14 Mar, 2015 , 5:31 am This refers to the article "Doctors kill more people than plane crashes" by Dr Fiaz Fazili. Comparing doctors who deal with humans with pilots who deal with man made airplanes is not fair. The author should know that treating humans is based on the success rates of the results of the researched data on the humans and as no two human beings are identical in this universe. Hence human body reactions to any drug or surgical procedure will definitely differ, unlike that of airplanes where an engineer and instructed pilot exactly know where the fault lies. Secondly putting American data on screen and comparing it with Indian setup that too with J&K does not hold any weight. In USA doctor patient ratio, nurse patient ratio, doctor nurse ratio, apart from their technical, pharmaceutical and diagnostic advancements are non-comparable, not to talk of late Dr Tom Chalmers arguments who counted drug side effects, interactions and surgical complications also as doctors negligence. Agreed that patients, their next-to-kin's have concerns about their dear ones, but the issue is different and beyond this proposition. Doctors always try their best to save the life of patients, assuming it their duty, while at times forgetting their other obligations. Sometimes it is misfortune, sometimes wrongs do happen even in best expert hands. But blaming only doctors does not seem reasonable. It could be because of administration or equipment failure as well. Doctors should perform better as expected by the society. But having high hopes that are beyond the capability of doctors is illogical. Sheikh M Ashraf Registrar in Pediatrics, SKIMS aashraf_05@yahoo.co.in
